While generally it is desirable to have references who are primarily superiors or peers, in the absence of those, references from your employees will certainly be of value as well. Another good resource would be clients or customers of your small business who have good things to say about you.
You did not mention how long you owned the small business, and if you had significant employment before that. If you did have previous employment and it was not a really long time ago, it would also be worthwhile to solicit recommendations and references from superiors or peers in prior role(s).
